Almost Heaven…West Virginia

 Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River…(are you singing yet?) Twin Falls State Park Resort in West Virginia, what a place! This is definitely up there among our favorite places to stay.  A crazy winding road up in the mountains led us to an oasis of a state park complete with miles of trails (careful to avoid afternoon hiking on certain trails that the copperheads like to sun themselves on), a pioneer village, 18 hole golf course (if you walk you play for free- which we did!), beautiful lodge and restaurant (we stayed in our “camper”lodge and our restaurant was a grill outside), playgrounds, tennis and pickle ball courts. Since it was off season there were only 3 other campers in our section of the campground. So quiet and spacious AND no bugs! The golf course was gorgeous! We played the front nine the day we arrived and the back nine the next day. Rick kept trying to pay but the nice lady in the pro shop said, “If you’re walking just grab a pull cart and go on out honey!” So...

Pack Rats??

 So, how many people really know what a pack rat is? I always thought it was a term to describe someone who collects lots of “stuff”. Well boy was I wrong. We pulled into Karchner Caverns State Park late one afternoon and as we were trying to negotiate where and how to set up our camper on a very in- level site, we were visited by the camp host. He started with, “Hi folks. Have you ever camped her before?” “No,” we replied. Then he proceeded to tell us about the pack rats in the area asking us if we had lights for under the truck and camper. We didn’t. He said for 2 nights we might be okay. They come out at night and get into the engine compartment chewing the wires and make big nests. They can ruin your truck in no time. And with that he bid us a goodnight. For the next couple of hours we struggled to level our camper ultimately breaking the jack. Rick and I tried to fix it but darkness set in and we decided to leave and book a hotel for the night and getting a new jack in the mor...

No Doubt…

 Toured the doubtful sound in Fiordland today. Nothing doubtful about it. It was undoubtedly the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen! It’s so remote that we had to take an hour boat ride across a big lake, then a 1 hour bus ride over a pass through the rain forest and finally a three hour boat ride though the fiords. Then all that in reverse!  Made friends with a Belgian couple who photo bombed our picture. We got a big chuckle out of this and jumped into their waterfall picture at the last minute!
